Iced Out Cross Trends: What's In, What's Fading, and What Actually Lasts

Iced out crosses are shifting in four directions right now. Baguette and channel set crosses are replacing all over micro pavé on daily pieces. Two tone and black and white contrast are replacing plain white ice. The cross motif is moving from the pendant into the chain. And lab grown diamonds are reaching full ice pieces as wholesale prices fall.

Trends built for camera wear out faster than trends built for the bench.

BlueIce Gems designs crosses in New York's Diamond District and builds them in Surat. Here is what is changing at the maker level and which details are more likely to last.

Table of Contents

Eight shifts are showing up most clearly:

  1. Baguette and channel set builds: Cleaner lines and stronger visual structure are replacing some all over micro pavé designs.
  2. Mixed setting builds: Channel set baguette borders combined with pavé centres are becoming a strong current combination.
  3. Two tone metal: Yellow gold and white metal combinations are creating more contrast.
  4. Black and white contrast: Dark stones against white metal create a sharper look than plain white ice.
  5. Cross inside the chain: The cross motif is being built directly into Cuban link chains instead of appearing only as a pendant.
  6. Custom over catalogue: More buyers are commissioning custom proportions, engraving and CAD designs.
  7. Lab grown diamonds at the top end: Falling wholesale prices are making full ice lab grown diamond crosses more realistic.
  8. Plain language labelling: Stone and metal descriptions are becoming more important so buyers know exactly what they are paying for.

The first five shifts change the look. The last three change what you are paying for.

Why are baguette crosses replacing all over pavé?

Baguettes look cleaner at a distance and can hold stones securely when they are set close together.

Micro pavé uses small raised beads and many contact points. A channel setting uses continuous walls around the stones.

The strongest current build is often a hybrid: a channel set baguette border with a pavé centre. It gives the cross a defined outline without losing the fully iced appearance.

Full micro pavé still works well for events and statement pieces. It is simply no longer the automatic choice for every daily cross.

Is two tone and black stone contrast still in?

Yes. Contrast is one of the easiest ways to make an iced out cross look different from another fully white piece.

Three versions are showing up regularly:

  • Yellow gold frame with a white stone field
  • White metal frame with a yellow gold field
  • Black and white stone combinations

Black moissanite is also being used for contrast pieces. BlueIce Gems offers black moissanite rings, and the same stone approach can be applied to cross designs.

There is one practical issue with contrast. Plating wears. White and black sections are often created through rhodium or other plated finishes. Solid colour metal avoids some of that maintenance.

Why is the cross moving from the pendant into the chain?

A cross built directly into a chain cannot swing, flip or tangle in the same way a separate pendant can.

The BlueIce Gems Royal Cross Miami Cuban Chain uses the cross motif directly inside the Cuban links. Each 15 mm Cuban link is iced with baguette stones in a cross pattern, so there is no separate bail or pendant to twist around.

The trade off is flexibility. A built in cross chain gives you one complete design, while a separate pendant can move between different chains.

See the full collection of iced out chains if the chain itself is the main part of the look.

Why are more people commissioning custom crosses?

CAD makes custom work easier to see before production.

Common requests include engraving on the back, initials or a name in the face, and non standard proportions such as Latin, Greek, Maltese or stretched cross shapes.

BlueIce Gems custom designs start as CAD. The CAD design process allows the design to be reviewed before production.

For buyers looking for a specific shape rather than an off the shelf pendant, see the custom iced out pendants collection.

How are falling lab grown prices changing iced out crosses?

Falling lab grown diamond prices are making full ice diamond crosses more realistic compared with moissanite based alternatives.

JCK reported in August 2026 that Edahn Golan's lab grown wholesale index fell 13 percent year over year in the second quarter of 2026, following a 14 percent decline in the first quarter and a 26 percent decline in 2025. The index was also reported as being down 96 percent since 2018. Paul Zimnisky noted that United States retailers were still marking lab grown diamonds more than 80 percent above wholesale.

Stone What it is Hardness Light Price direction Resale on fashion cross Best for
Moissanite Silicon carbide 9.25 More fire Stable Minimal Maximum ice per dollar and strong fire
Lab grown diamond Carbon, same crystal as mined diamond 10 Diamond light Falling year over year Minimal Real diamond cross and full ice
Natural diamond Mined carbon diamond 10 Diamond light Under pressure Limited, mostly metal and larger stones Buyers wanting mined stones

If the priority is having a diamond, lab grown is the diamond option. Falling prices do not make a fashion cross a store of value.

If the priority is maximum fire for the money and there is no requirement for the stone to be a diamond, moissanite remains an option.

Which cross trends are about honest labels?

Plain language naming matters when the same visual style can be made with different stones and metals.

The FTC Jewelry Guides state that a diamond is pure carbon crystallised in the isometric system. Laboratory grown diamonds need a clear qualifier such as laboratory grown or laboratory created. Moissanite is not diamond.

The FTC also defines vermeil as sterling silver plated with gold of at least 10 karat.

For an iced out cross listing, check that:

  • The stone is named exactly
  • The metal is named exactly
  • Any plating is clearly identified
  • The karat and metal stamps are stated where applicable

BlueIce Gems listings identify the stone and metal, including VVS moissanite or lab grown diamond in 925 silver, 10K, 14K or 18K gold, or platinum.

Which iced out cross trends will date fastest?

Some looks are more dependent on the moment than the construction.

  • Oversized crosses on very thin chains
  • Open pavé on plated silver
  • Cubic zirconia iced crosses
  • Unnamed stones

Construction details are more likely to stay useful. Channel borders, solid metal, a proper bail and clearly named stones are decisions that matter beyond a single trend cycle.

Cross construction is changing, but the source does not provide enough first party order data to publish reliable estimates for this section.

Which trend fits how you'll wear your cross?

Every day

A channel set baguette border with a pavé centre, combined with solid 14K gold and moissanite, gives a structured everyday direction.

Events and content

Full micro pavé and a two tone frame create a stronger statement for events, photography and content.

If you want a real diamond

A lab grown full ice cross gives you a real diamond while the stone is clearly identified as lab grown on the paperwork.

If you want something unique

Custom proportions, an engraved back or initials can make the cross specific to the wearer. CAD allows the design to be reviewed before production.

If you already own a pendant

A cross pattern Cuban chain can add the motif without replacing the pendant.

FAQ

What is the most popular iced out cross trend right now?

Baguette and channel set construction with a pavé centre is one of the strongest current directions. Full bust down designs still work for events and statement pieces.

Are iced out crosses still in style?

Yes. The cross remains the core design. What changes is the construction, setting style, metal combination and stone choice.

Is moissanite better than lab grown diamond for an iced out cross?

Moissanite produces more fire and has a hardness of 9.25. Lab grown diamond is real diamond and has a hardness of 10. Lab grown prices have been falling, while neither option provides meaningful resale value on a typical fashion cross.

Can moissanite be called diamond encrusted?

No. Moissanite should be identified as moissanite. It should not be presented as diamond.

Does a two tone iced out cross need more maintenance?

Usually, yes. Two tone designs may use rhodium or other plating, which can wear over time. Solid single colour metal avoids some of that maintenance.

What is a cross Cuban chain?

A cross Cuban chain uses the cross pattern directly within the Cuban links. The BlueIce Gems Royal Cross design uses 15 mm links with baguette stones arranged in a cross pattern.

Design your cross

Start with the trend that fits how the cross will actually be worn. Model the design before production and choose the stone and metal based on the intended use.
