Cuban Link Chain Size Guide: Width & Length

Cuban Link Chain Size Guide: Width & Length

Three iced-out Cuban link chains at 6mm, 10mm and 14mm laid flat side by side with a millimetre rule for scale

A 20-inch chain sits at the collarbone. A 24-inch chain sits mid-chest. When choosing your Cuban chain size, most buyers choose 8–10mm. This range is visible and light for daily wear. Go narrower for layering. Go wider for a solo statement. A wider chain has a thicker cross-section. It hangs higher on your chest than a narrow one.

Most people buy a chain twice. They guess first, then buy again when it fits wrong. This guide comes from the manufacturer. We show how width and length sit on a body. Learn how to measure before you commit.

Width is measured in millimetres across the face of a link. It is not the metal thickness or diagonal. Length is measured in inches, clasp included. This is the full circumference of the loop.

Two 10mm chains can look different. Width alone does not show link depth or packing. A flat 10mm link reads wider on the chest than a chunky one. Iced links add visual width. Stones sit proud of the metal surface.

This matters when you're comparing across sellers. Width is a real, checkable number; how that width reads depends on construction. Ask for the link depth alongside the width if you're deciding between two chains that quote the same millimetre figure.

Every chain in our iced-out chains collection is made to order. Width and length are specifiable. They are not fixed to stock sizes.

Same Cuban link chain widths worn on a model, photographed at conversational distance

For most buyers, 8–10mm. It's readable from across a room, sits comfortably under a collar, and carries a pendant without strain.

Here's a reference that costs nothing to check: look at the width of your own index fingernail. On most adults that's somewhere between 12 and 16mm. A 10mm chain is noticeably narrower than that. A 14mm chain is about the width of the nail itself. People consistently overestimate how wide 10mm looks in a product photo and underestimate how it feels on the neck.

Width How It Reads Best For Layering
4–6mm Subtle. Reads as jewelry, not as a statement Under-shirt wear, pendant chains, layering base Excellent sits cleanly under wider pieces
8mm Clearly visible, still understated Daily wear, smart-casual, first iced chain Good pairs with one thinner chain
10mm Statement. Visible at conversational distance Solo centrepiece, daily wear if construction is solid Limited  works with one much thinner chain
12mm Dominant. Becomes the outfit's focal point Streetwear silhouettes, occasional wear Not recommended
14mm+ Maximum presence Stage, shoots, collector pieces No

The most common mistake is buying the widest chain your budget allows. Width photographs best, so it is often over-weighted. A solid 10mm outperforms a 14mm with weak links. Prioritize build quality over width if budget is tight.

Cuban link chains at 18, 20, 22 and 24 inches worn over a plain t-shirt showing where each length sits

20 inches for a collarbone sit, 22–24 inches for mid-chest. Those two cover most buyers. We produce chains in 18", 20", 22", 24" and longer.

Length Where It Sits on an Average Adult Male Frame Wears Well With
18" At the base of the neck, close to a choker Open collar, crew neck; solo
20" At or just below the collarbone Most necklines; the standard first chain
22" Upper chest, above the sternum T-shirts, layering as the longer piece
24" Mid-chest Pendant display; oversized silhouettes
26"+ Lower chest toward the sternum base Stage, streetwear, heavy pendants

Frame matters more than height. A broad chest consumes more chain length. Two people of identical height may need different lengths for the same look.

Measure before you order. Use a string loop at your considered size. Wear it over the shirt you will pair it with. Mark where it lands, then measure the string flat. This beats every size chart.

How Do Width and Length Work Against Each Other?

A 6mm and a 12mm Cuban chain of identical 22-inch length worn together, showing the wider chain hanging higher

A wider chain hangs higher than a narrow chain of the same length. Most guides leave this out. That is why a 22" 12mm chain sits differently than a 6mm.

This is about geometry. A wide link has real depth. More length is consumed wrapping the neck. Less is left to drop down the chest. Box clasps also shorten the effective drop.

If you move to a wider chain, expect the drop to sit higher. Consider adding length to compensate. This depends on the link profile. We prefer to measure for your specific piece.

Weight compounds this. A wider chain is heavier. Heavier chains settle rather than drape. They move less as you do.

How Do You Size a Chain for a Pendant?

Size the chain to the pendant's bail, then to its weight. Both have to clear before length or width matters.

The bail is the loop for the pendant. Its inner size sets the maximum chain width. A tight fit wears against the bail as it swings. Check the bail size before ordering.

Weight is the second gate. Heavy pendants on narrow chains concentrate load at the bail. This is where failures start. Match substantial pendants with solid chains.

Pendant chains usually run longer than chains worn alone. This ensures the pendant is seen. We suggest specifying the custom pendant collection and chain together. The bail is then cut to the chain.

What Our Own Catalogue and Bench Say About Sizing

We manufacture in our own Surat units. Sizing constraints come from production, not a size chart.

Every chain is made to order. Length and width are not fixed. We list 18", 20", 22" and 24". Longer options are available. We have 108 designs in silver and 105 in gold. If you need 21.5", we make it. You do not have to round your measurements.

Spec is fixed across the range. We use VVS clarity, DEF colorless stones. Choose moissanite or lab-grown diamonds. Options include silver, gold, or platinum. Per FTC guides (16 CFR § 23), gold must be disclosed by karat. Check metal specs when comparing sellers.

Clasps are specified to the chain, not the other way round. Our heavier chains use hidden box clasps with dual safety locks; lighter builds use open box clasps. Clasp choice follows the weight the chain will carry.

Production runs 2–4 weeks after design approval, and width and length can both be adjusted during that window.

Which Size Is Actually Right for You?

Buying your first chain: 20" at 8–10mm. This range fits a real wardrobe. This width looks correct for years.

Buying to wear a pendant: 22–24", width matched to the bail. Give the pendant room to sit where it's visible.

Buying to layer: one chain at 4–6mm and 18–20", one at 8–10mm and 22–24". Contrast in both dimensions is what makes a stack read as deliberate.

Buying a statement piece: 12mm+ at 24" or longer, worn solo. Accept that this is an occasion piece rather than a daily one, and specify the clasp accordingly.

Buying for stage or camera: width over subtlety, and length long enough to stay visible when you move. Worth booking a consultation rather than ordering from a chart.

Check the iced-out chain buying guide for styles. It covers construction, metals, and stones. For moissanite versus lab-grown, see that comparison here.

Frequently Asked Questions

20 inches at 8–10mm is the range most buyers choose. It's visible without dominating, works under a collar, and carries a pendant. Wider than 12mm becomes an occasion piece rather than a daily one for most wearers.

Is a 10mm Cuban Chain Too Big for Everyday Wear?

No, provided the construction supports it. A 10mm on solid metal with soldered links and a box clasp wears daily without issue. The problem with 10mm chains is usually build quality at that width, not the width itself.

Should I Size Up If I'm Buying a Wider Chain?

Yes. A wider link consumes more length wrapping the neck. The drop sits higher than a narrow chain. Measure with string at the width you are buying.

What Length Chain Do I Need for a Pendant?

Usually 22–24 inches. This keeps the pendant on the chest. Confirm the bail fits your chain width. A tight fit will wear against the bail.

Can I Order a Custom Chain Length?

Yes. Every chain is made to order, so any measured length can be produced rather than rounded to a stock size. Width can be specified the same way. Production is 2–4 weeks after design approval.

Does Chain Width Affect How Much a Chain Weighs?

Substantially  weight rises faster than width, because a wider link is deeper as well as broader. Precise gram weights by width and metal are being measured on our bench and will be published here.

How Do I Measure My Neck for a Chain?

Loop a string at your chosen length. Wear it over your shirt. Mark where it lands, then measure the string flat. This gives the most realistic number.
